Though Buenos Aires is a blast, and there is so much to do it would take months, it's always fun to take a day trip from the capital to see what life is like outside the big city.  Tigre is a great day trip for budget travelers who want to go beyond B.A.

No doubt you've heard of this beautiful delta town.  It's favoured by locals as a nice weekend spot, and no wonder.  Tigre is lovely, shaded by green, leafy trees, much more natural than Buenos Aires, and centers around the deep, cool river running through it.  For those who live there, the river is like the main street, and people take water taxis everywhere, like in Venice.  Grocery stores even deliver groceries by water taxi!

Large houses right on the river look luxurious and the surrounding area is calm, peaceful, and very relaxing.  You can walk along the river while taking in the smells of fresh fish and grilled meat from the restaurants lining the banks before choosing a favorite and sitting down.  The "fruit market" is a great place to shop, and is open every day, not just weekends.  It's not really a fruit market, but sells candy, chocolate, delicacies, leather, sheep skins, materials, clothes, jewelry, mates, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

To get to Tigre, you can take the TBA (Trenes de Buenos Aires) "Tigre" line.  It leaves from Retiro Station (built as an exact replica of Victoria Station in Britain), and takes about 45 minutes to arrive at the Tigre train station.  Vendors will walk through the train on the way, selling everything from socks to alfajores to chocolate bars to soda.
